St.Anthony’s Church

st. anthony dharaviIn 1939, a shed containing six rooms was obtained from Bombay Municipality by the influence of Dr.Donald who was the physician in Doctor Donald dispensary. Archbishop Roberts had a special interest in Dharavi area and appointed catechism teachers. For the first time, the feast of St.Anthony was celebrated in 1940.

Till 1975, the sub-centre was looked after by the Diocesan Priests from St.Michael’s Church, Mahim. The Priests spent their time and energy for the people of Dharavi. In 1971 the Church secured the surrounding place for the Church and Primary School.

In 1975 the Carmelite Fathers of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Sion took care of the sub-centre. In 1976 it was included in their parish. Their hard works for 25 years have to be applauded. On 1st June 2000 Dharavi became a separate parish.

The presence of the Helpers of Mary from 1962 proved to be beneficial to the lives of the people. They first settled in two small rooms, which were used as a prayer room and their house. Their involvement in the Religious education, health, literacy and other social activities has made them close to the people. Other congregations like the Cannossian Daughters of Charity and Carmelite Religious looked after the school.
